NIRMA History

The Nuclear Information and Records Management Association (NIRMA) is a non-profit, professional association established in 1977. NIRMA supports regulated nuclear and selected energy-related industries that must deal with stringent information management regulations. Its goal is to assist individuals and their companies in developing and maintaining the technical foundation required to handle the increased pressures that mark our quickly advancing information age.

  • 1977: First meeting of nuclear utility records managers in Miami.

  • 1978: First formal symposium held in Syracuse. Official organization formed - Nuclear Records Management Association (NRMA). Post - Three Mile Island accident: NRMA led the way in introducing processes for dealing with increased demands for information. Focus redirected away from administration and toward the full scope of information management.

  • 1983: NRMA establishes its position for the industry on open records retention issues.

  • 1985: Renamed the Nuclear Information and Records Management Association (NIRMA) to reflect change in mission.

  • 1989: NIRMA publishes its first Position Paper on Configuration Management.

  • 1991: First large-scale Department of Energy participation. Today: The association continues to broaden its horizons, making its expertise available to all industries which deal with the management of information in a regulated environment.

  • 1993: Electronic Information Exchange taskforce initiated. First examinations administered for the CRM/NS. NIRMA awards the first six Nuclear Information Management Specialist (NS) certifications.

  • 1998: The initial Hans Ebner Memorial Award is presented to Bruce Evans.

  • 2000: ANSI/NIRMA CM 1.0, Configuration Management standard is issued.

  • 2000: The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission issues Regulatory Issue Summary 00-18, "Guidance on Managing Quality Assurance Records in Electronic Media," which endorses the use of NIRMA TG11, TG15, TG16, and TG21.

  • 2004: NIRMA and The International Atomic Energy Agency establish co-sponsorship of the Nuclear Information and Records Management Conference. This cooperative agreement continues.

  • 2005 and 2006: Joint NIRMA/Scientect held combined Procedures and Nuclear Information management Conferences.

  • 2006: NIRMA celebrates its 30 Anniversary.

Industry Role:
Supporting regulated nuclear and selected energy-related industries, agencies, and their regulators in development, implementation and administration of documents, records, and information management processes to facilitate cost-effective operations and regulatory compliance.

NIRMA is provides the guidance basis for electronic records management through its Technical Guidelines referenced under the NRC's Regulatory Information Summary 00-18.  NIRMA is, in fact, a standards-based organization under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and has established an ANSI-based standard for the configuration management of nuclear facilities. Other topics that NIRMA is engaged in include: Electronic Information Exchange (EIE), risk-informed regulations, data management, the "living documents" process, decommissioning, and license renewal.
